Lenape Removal from Lenapehocking

Lenape Removal Map

Each of the five Federally recognized tribes of the Lenape Nation have their own removal stories. Removals were forced by Government order with military enforcedment or civilian violence  that the US or State governments ignored. The first removal from the lands of William Penn's treaties were by crowding out and resource depletion by the steady flow of immigration of Europe’s landless and religiously oppressed peoples. Starting with Penn's sons, John and Thomas and the Land Agent James Logan, removals became more corrupt, legally mandated and violent. State sanctioned bounties for scalps, enslavement and militia led massacres became tools of removal.  From the early 1700's to 1901 the Lenape were forced steadily westward from their Northeastern woodland homeland of Lenapehocking to five separate regions ranging from the Great Lakes in Canada all the way south to Oklahoma.  Each removal requiring adaption to a new environment and disrupting culture and language.

The story of on of these tribes, the Delaware Tribe of Indians in Bartlesville Oklahoma can be read here
